This grilled cheese sandwich will change your life.. I swear, I promise! I’ve craved it ever since the first day. I’m going to let you in on my top secret ingredient that I use to make a grown up out of this little kid sandwich! True story, not lying or embellishing at all and no this is not a sponsored post. I use this now pretty much every single time I cook. Are you ready for it? Garlic Oil, yes you read that correctly! How have I lived this long without it?!
This time of the year is when my love for food really comes out! I tend to connect most holidays with favourite foods. If you haven’t noticed, I really enjoy preparing food for people. The only exception to that love is cooking for my children! Ava has been giving me a run for my culinary money lately and Zoe is following suit. Recently, when doing some research, I stumbled across what is now my favourite cooking staple! I even use it to make an adult version of my kids favourite – a grilled cheese sandwich!
It’s only been a few days since the Christmas holidays have begun but I’m already growing weary of the girls’ culinary tastes! PBJ, Macaroni & Cheese, Mr. Noodles.. how much more can a mom take? After the 3rd grilled cheese sandwich, I couldn’t take it. There has to be a way to compromise on this classic comfort food!
I am a garlic fiend; I use it everywhere I can! Not only do I love the taste of garlic, additionally it helps keep away both colds and vampires! Everywhere that a recipe calls for oil, I use my garlic oil, except when baking cause that would be gross! My gift to you this holiday season, my garlic oil recipe!
4 Garlic cloves crushed
1 cup of Olive Oil
Yes, it’s actually just that easy! I crush 4 whole garlic gloves and then put them in a pot at medium high heat with the cup of oil. Once bubbles form around the edges of the garlic cloves, turn the heat down to low and let simmer for 10-15 minutes. Once the time is up, I strain the oil into an old Mason jar and dispose of the cloves in the food waste bin. DONE!
Now, when the kids start asking for lunch yet again and want that 15th grilled cheese sandwich, this slight change will have you craving more too! Zoe had no problem chowing down a grilled cheese with garlic oil, however, miss picky herself Ava wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot pole. That’s ok, more for me! Simply brush side of the bread that actually connects with the frying pan or sandwich maker with the garlic oil and voila, this grilled cheese just got a whole lot classier! I like to keep a few “grown up” cheeses on hand and when making my own sandwich, I simply substitute their favourite cheddar for a truck load of gooey Jalapeno Havarti.
Paired with a bowl of Tomato soup and lunchtime with both Ava and Zoe home has been saved. Garlic oil has changed my cooking and it even works well in salads, on pizza instead of tomato sauce and when cooking all meat! If you love garlic as much as I do, this recipe is for you!
